What's the difference between Windows Messenger and MSN

I have messenger 6.1 installed but I cannot remove messenger 4.7.  I can remove the complete file in Programs and as soon as I start a pdf file it reinstalls 4.7 even though 6.1 is running
How do I get rid of 4.7 for good???

we have windows xp and windows messenger was installed automatically on our system.  We use msn instant messenger and do not wish to have windows messenger.  It automatically signs in when we check our mail.  Is there a way to uninstall windows messenger?
