Every time I open my email a box comes up saying windows messenger needs an update, click yes to update. Ido and then it says the version I have is newer, do I want to continue, so of course I say no then, as it would install

I need to stop windows messenger popping up every time I connect to the internet using IE and/or OE in Win XP Pro. Anyone know how I can do this? I want to be able to use it, but only when I really need to, not all the time.

My display name for messenger is my e-mail address and it is greyed out so I cant change it ( under messenger/options). Right below that it says dont use your e-mail address.
