Each time I open My Network Places, the window goes blank while it searches
for shared folders on other Workgroup computers (a home workgroup of all XP
systems).
In searching here and elsewhere, the solution suggested seems to be:

I can't seem to figure out the logic but every once and a

I seem to have 2 networks one under MSHome and the other under Workgroup  How

Windows XP Pro on Both Computers on Home Network with Linkysys Router.  
Firewalls all unistalled and off.  Simple File Sharing on Both computers.  
Both computers have the exact workgroup name.  Only the laptop can access the
desktop PC that has a shared folder I set.

Our "my documents" folder is redirected to \\server\username$ and made
available offline.  When working remotely (by means of a VPN), we suffer two
problems:
1.  We cannot reach other shares on the same server until folder
