My nice new computer keeps doing strange things. It

I'm new to XP.  I set it up, with a customizable area for my husband and myself.  When I turn on my pc, it comes up fast.  I click "Diana" and it takes 5 minutes or more to get to my desktop.  Is this the way it is?  Or can this be speeded up at all?
