If I want to upgrade to XP should I backup all my data on my hard drive or will it be intact after the upgrade, I would be installing from a upgrade CD, not a full install CD.

XP does not want to shut down. Everytime I try, the
computer just reboots.  Even when I log off first, the
computer does not turn off when I choose shut down
computer.  I have to manually turn it off.  XP shut down

I am facing a very peculiar problem with
my windows xp laptop.
My compaq laptop is loaded with xp home edition
and as soon as i log into it it logs me out.

i've tried to use several cd-rom discs, but my formerly cd-rw/dvd drive only
plays dvd movies now.  Can someone please help me.
