My laptop was sent away as it was overheating. Apparently, the cuprit was a faulty fan. After getting it back, it seems to shut down after a few minutes of inactivity.

I had Automatic Updates set to "norify but don't download." Today a globe with the microsoft flag appeared in the toolbox, and data was moving. The globe rollover said "automatic updates." I then switched off automatic updates in control panel and rebooted.

XP Home SP1 E-Machines PC. As purchased it worked fine. Now it works terribly slow. AVG6 up to date and finds no virus infection. Almost every operation that required disk access in slow as molasses. Have done a complete defrag.
