Since yesterday I have not been able to close down my computer, except by pulling the plug. Clicking Restart, Standbye or Closedown has no effect. AOL Computer Check says the machine is in good health.

On opening task manager the different tabs at the top of the window for processes etc are not visible, neither are the minimize, maximise, close buttons. Even when clicking in the areas where they are supposed to be does nothing

bought this p4 with xp home a year ago and turned it on and was blown away by how quick it started up after only 10 seconds or so, now I can turn on the computer and go make a coffee and come back to see the welcome screen.
