How does Windows Update know the difference between a fully patched
machine and a machine that still needs to get it's patches from
Windows Update?  What mechanism causes the user's machine to be
scanned for the lastes MS patches?  Is there some kind of change in

Programs start running slow. Hourglass never goes off.
Task manager shows CPU usage fluctuating from 0 - 100%  
No virus shows up; No spyware shows up. To check it out,
I disconnect internet. Close PopUp killer. Close Virus

My system plays no sound (Device manager shows an

for the internal cd-rom and the external cd-r/w drives are

I replaced my hard drive because of a problem. I booted
off the XP Prof CD and created a partition and formatted
then installed. Now my drive letter is K:. Is there a way
to change it back to C:? I tried using Disk Management

WXPH running on VAIO desktop machine.  Used MSCONFIG to
remove free trial software called Quik Shield (pop-up
blocker) that had expired, from start-up in system
configuration utility. Rebooted.  Windows will not reboot
