I have recently replaced the OS of a Presario 7000 to XP home. After noticing incredibly slow performance, upgraded ram to 512. Sytem still is painfully slow. Could this be a bad H.D.?, What else would cause such slow speed after a fresh OS install?

I have Office 2003 SetUp files stored on my HD. When I do XP CleanDisk, these SetUp Fiels are always analyzed which delays the actual cleaning process. Is there a way - apart from deleting the SetUp files - to avoid CleanDisk to analyze these files? Thanks

when I view the contents of a folder with mixed file
types and jpegs, frequently (say 4 in 5 times) explorer
will have an error and then close.

When certain programs accessed, an annoying sound similar to a mooing cow sounds out  i.e.when msn, google accessed.  Ad-aware, Norton anti virus and spybot searches indicate no viruses yet annoying sound comes on spradically. Any ideas what this is and how to get rid of it?  

For the third after performming a full chkdsk my computer

Why is it so difficult to reformatt my c:\ drive w/ XP? I
like to reformatt my hard-drive every so often to get rid
of stuff and XP has me bangin' my head against a wall.
