I am attempting to correct a problem on my mothers

Everytime I start the computer this message appears after

I was forced to use a "RECOVERY DISK" to re=install my
Windows XP. I can NOT get works or Microsoft
WORD....which were both on when I got my original Windows

Whenever I check on help/support I get the error message "helpctr.exe is not a valid win32 application."
Also, when I go to standby and come out of it, my disk drive sounde weird, which it never does on booting or out of hibernate.

Recently upgraded to Windows XP Professional. My computer
now just shuts down unexpectedly / spontaneously and

how do I tell if I am logged on as the administrator? I'm
the only one that uses my computer. I can't get the
default setting to stay on microsoft they change back to
custom everytime i hit ok and close the window. Thanks
