xp seems to work, not too slow, but whenever I click on direct access icons
to my documents or try to access them through the start menu or task bar, the
screen goes blank ( but leaves wallpaper intact). All the icons and taskbar
return after a couple of seconds without opening ...

I have a laptop that had a 20G HD. I hooked up a USB 60G drive and cloned the 20G to
it. Took the 20G out, put the 60G in. Booted fine, everything looks OK.

I am having a problem getting a USB device to work, and I cannot restore my
system to earlier checkpoints.  This all started today when I plugged in a
USB flatbed scanner I haven't used for a few weeks. Windows reported an
error; when  I checked Device Manager, it says:
