I am not exactly sure this is an XP issue:
When I save an attachment to a folder containing a file created in the same
application, the name of the file automatically will default to the
previously existing file located in the folder.

I have a clean install of WinXP Pro on a Core 2 Duo E6600 with 4Gb of RAM.  
The machine has an Asus EN7600 GS Silent video card with 512Mb.  The system
