Seemingly at random, a print job will finish, but won't

I've recently installed XP Home and have trialling the Fax application.
Everything is working fine other than if I try to view a fax in the Fax
Console nothing happens. I get the hourglass for a second and the mouse
pointer does its nice multi colored thing, that's it.
