I am running XP pro on an older HP desktop.  I am attempting to encode home
movies into an MPEG-2 to burn to a DVD.  The problem is the encode takes
about 24 hours and either one of my two kids always logs on and stops the
process somehow.

Whenever I go to scan for errors it stops at compressing old files
