after tying to download SP1 for winXP, i can't access system restore

I keep getting a message every time I log onto the
internet. After about 2 minutes of surfing, I get a
message which says something like "this shutdown was
initiated by NT AUTHORITY/SYSTEM.  Windows must shut down

After I have used the removal tool from Symantec to
remove this virus, the tool says I don't have it.
However, it keeps reappearing and disconnecting me. What

I have clicked on "Start" and "All Programs" this morning but nothing
is displayed.  If I switch to the "classic view" and click on "start"
and then "programs", it just displays "(Empty)".  However, if I right
click on the "Start" button and go to "open" it fires up the correct
