Thanks for all the great advice on removing adware.  I stupidly allow a trick popup to dump a bunch of spy and ad garbage on my machine.  I have removed most of the offenders with ad-aware and followed other good advice.  However, I still have some lingering problems.

Get this.  Whenever I go through the process of searching
for, and selecting updates for my computer, once the
installation process starts my computer shuts down and
restarts.
