My WinXP Home Edition PC no longer autoupdates. Why? The Security Center is disabled. Going in to Services and changing in to automatic has no impact, since it reverts to disabled when the PC is booted. I have run various AVG & Bitdefender and have found nothing.

Seems like you need a good virus program and many anti-spyware programs to keep your computer safe. IE running AVG along with Adware, Microsoft's Windows Defender, and Spybot Search & Destroy as sometimes one program picks up something the others do

This dialer is found by S&D and removed by it, only to return at each new boot. It is not found by WinDef, Ad-Aware SE Plus or BT-Yahoo Anti-Spy. Is there any way to prevent its recurrence. TIA.

On my local PC (Windows XP SP2), in "Local Security Settings>Local Policies>User Rights Assignments" I get "Windows cannot read template information". Any idea what happened and/or how to get this back? --
