In Windows XP SP2 Professional to skip having to log on every time I start Windows or come back after it goes to the screensaver. Can the logon procedure be disabled as in the old Windows Logon procedure?

After I installed the windows update (KB921883) on my home PCs several key services no longer start even though they are set to automatic. The end result is that I have no windows workgroup shares, no ability to connect to other PCs, and no sound from the sound card.
