In XP setup text mode.
Setup starts then error message comes up

This started happening about less than a week ago,
whenever i try to install anything in windows xp, the
progress bar always stops forever, i've had this computer
with XP for a really long time and even something similar

I am experiencing a very slow boot up. On average it can
take 3-4 mins to get windows xp up and running.

I keep getting messages that Windows XP setup does not
support upgrading from Windows 98. Everything I find on
the Microsoft site says that 98 and 98SE is upgradable.  
My system requirements are all fine.  Any ideas?  I don't
