Had a perfectly running 98 and decided to upgrade to XP. After entering the product key, it went to screen that said checking hardware. It never comes out of that screen. Is there a log that would help me find out what the problem is?

In preparation of SP2 installation on XP (with automatic update)I swept the system for virusses & spyware (Ad-aware & Spybot; didnt find more than the 'normal' tracking cookies), and installed the latest BIOS from Dell.
