Running XP SP2.  Have a Compaq computer with the "Recovery Discs", not a real
XP disc.  Borrowed someone's XP Pro SP2 to try and repair the XP installation
on my C drive.
First problem that came up during boot was: Windows could not start because

I run Windows XP home edition.
Recently, several programs have appeared and vanish when my cursor goes near
them.
It appeared to start with Windows Update. The icon told me an update was

Get message [No valid rendering code path detected

I get a Windows Update error. It turns out I need to uninstall Microsoft.net
Framework 1.1 (+ recent versions) and reinstall them. When I try to uninstall
I am asked to "Insert the Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1 disk and click OK."
I don't think I ever had disks for Microsoft.NET. ...

Now I've done it... sigh: I'm unsure which of my CoA's goes with which
computer.  ('Put the CoA's on the door panels, then mixed up the panels. )  
Is there a way to extract or infer the CoA from something [like the Registry]?

I have come across the SMTP service on XP if you install IIS.  What is the
application for this?  Is it for people hosting say a web server on an
intranet allowing an email service from the web server?
I am interested to know how this is likely to be used?

I had set a new folder months ago under the C drive in My Computer.  I had
saved all the programs I downloaded from the internet.  Now, I can no longer
save to this folder or delete anything in it.  I keep getting an access
denied message.

Chkdsk will not run on a Thinkpad T60, and it generates no error message.  It
just ignores the dirty bit and an active /F request on startup.  I know there
is file system corruption.  I've tried every remedy I can find on the net.  I
can't use recovery console because Lenovo ...

When there are dot-in-circle choices, is there any way to delete a choice so
no dots remain?

my computer shuts off for no reason at all but it doesnt shut all the way
down. To get it to come back on i have to hold the power button for 5 sec let
