I use WinXP SP2 with a 735 MHZ processor and 368 MB RAM and my copy of Outlook Express 6 can send all my e-mails, but receives only some of my e-mails but then just freezes. The animation of the receiving arrow still moves but it's like the connection goes dead.

When I attach a file of any size in Outlook Express it now takes 5 minutes. The program hangs until the file is finally attached. The same thing happens in Thunderbird, so it looks like something is wrong in XP, not the email program.
