I have a problem with a new installation XP Pro: seems to boot as normal, and gets to the blue "Loading personal settings" screen with the Windows logo, but it doesn't display the words, just the logo. The system doesn't appear to be locked, as the mouse still moves

Friends, I am using WinXP home sp2 and IE7. I often receive messages with internal links referring to other parts of the message. Until a month ago these were working just fine. I would click on the internal link and IE7 would jump to the appropriate place in the message.

Long distance friend - newbie - does not have sp2 but claims to be getting updates from M.S. If sp2 install is bad she would be stuck. Is she ok with xp w/o sp2 if she is getting updates?
