Can't boot system. Error message: cannot update register. I've changed the hard drive and the system now works, but I have a ton of data on the old drive. Any idea how I can access this info? Thanks

Windows used to pop up a dialog box asking what I wanted to do with the contents of a usb thumb drive when first inserted. Now when I insert usb drives, They are assigned a drive letter, but I get no Windows popup asking what I want to do. How do I turn that feature back on.

When I enter my password to start windows it then says loading your settings, it is now freezing right there, I tried signing on under wifes name which is not password protected and it does the same thing, any idea what is happening? How to fix? I am not that computer savy ! ...
