When I try and bring my computer out of Standby the power light comes on the fans start (not sure if the Hard drive spins up) but the monitor and all USB devices do not start. I have all the latest XP updates and drivers and the problem just started a few days ago out of the blue ...

After updating to Windows XP SP3, everytime I try to install or uninstall an application Windows Installer requires the application's source CD-ROM containing the *.msi file. There is no *.msi file, just setup.exe; therefore, the application cannot be installed or uninstalled.

When i check the c drive with norton anti-virus it says i have approx 1 million files, 700,000 of which are in c:\windows\installer. What are they and can they be safely deleted?
