I recently reinstalled windows xp and now I am having trouble installing all the updates. It appears as if they download okay but nothing installs. Can anyone shed some light on how to fix this problem?

My original OS was XP Pro SP1a so is the installation CD. The OS of mine has become via automatic upgrades SP2. As it turned out to be the computer's OS was missing i386 folder and its files required for the Fax service's installation.

When I try to logon, Windows XP loads my settings and then automatically logs me off. It does this with all the profiles on my computer.

I think I used to be able to find in the registry the following: \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\RUN Where I could disable any programs that run at boot. It seems to have changed. Now I cannot find it. Perhaps I forgot where it is.

Randomly my screen goes black. I can slightly see my desktop, but not enough to do anything. I have to close my laptop screen and open it back up for it to go back to normal. Also when its going back to normal it fades from a red. So whats the deal here? Anyone know?
